The Frides Way
At St Frideswide we recognise that the teaching of DT requires a different approach to other subjects. Our curriculum builds on the fact that most inventions come from ideas that are already in existence and over time are gradually improved. As such we begin projects using designers as inspiration, modelling to pupils that the design process is iterate looking at the weakness of designs and making adjustments accordingly.
Our aim is that throughout their time in school children build a DT schema that supports them to take inspiration from design; master practical techniques and design, make, evaluate and improve their own products.
DT is block taught and children progress through each design project practising basic tasks and engaging in the iterative process. Children repeat these processes, developing their knowledge and strengthening their schema over time so they leave St Frideswide able to:
- Take creative risks to produce innovative ideas and prototypes
- Use time efficiently and work constructively and productively with others.
- Carry out thorough research, show initiative and ask questions to develop knowledge of users’ needs.
- Act as responsible designers and makers, working ethically, using finite materials carefully and working safely.
- Choose which tools, equipment and materials to use to make their products.
- Apply mathematical knowledge.
- Manage risks exceptionally well to manufacture products safely and hygienically.
