The Frides Way
At St Frideswide we believe that PE has an important role in promoting long term healthy life styles. We want all children to experience a wider range of high quality PE opportunities so that they can succeed and achieve in a range of sports for life as well as competitive sport. PE lessons should be enjoyable, challenging and fun, providing opportunities for children to develop sporting skills and transferable life skills. such as fairness, respect and collaboration. Our PE curriculum is organised into a progression model that builds on a multi-sport approach. Pupils participate in weekly high quality PE and sporting activities, encouraging them to develop the confidence, toleration and appreciation of their own and others strengths and weaknesses.
We provide opportunities for children to engage in extra -curricular sporting activities during and after school in addition to taking part in competitive sporting events. This is an inclusive approach which endeavours to include everybody and also encourages emotional well being.
Swimming to the national curriculum standard is prioritised in Year 5 to ensure that children are safe in the locality and have this important skill for life. By creating a positive environment and putting PE and physical activity at the heart of school life we aim for children to leave St Frideswide with:
- The ability to acquire new knowledge and skills.
- The willingness to practise skills in a wide range of different activities and situations, alone, in small groups and in teams and to apply these skills in chosen activities.
- Physical fitness.
- A healthy lifestyle, achieved by eating sensibly, avoiding smoking, drugs and alcohol and exercising regularly.
- A willingness to participate in every lesson.
- The ability to swim at least 25 metres before the end of Year 6 and knowledge of how to remain safe in and around water.
