The Frides Way

At St Frideswide we believe that children need to understand that maths is a life skill and an essential part of their learning journey.  We want all children to foster an enjoyment of mathematics, developing a sense of curiosity about the subject with clear understanding.  As a Mastery Embedding school and believe that every child has the potential to be a successful mathematician.

We want children to be deep thinkers acquiring maths skills and facts that can be recalled quickly and applied across different subjects.  We believe that maths is the foundation for understanding the world and we want our children to know the purpose behind their learning and to apply their knowledge in their everyday lives.

Our aim is that all children will become resilient, fluent mathematicians with an ability to tackle problem solving and take on maths in the real world.  As they leave St Frideswide they should have:

  • An understanding of the important concepts and an ability to make connections within mathematics.
  • A broad range of skills in using and applying mathematics.
  • Fluent knowledge and recall of number facts and the number system.
  • The ability to show initiative in solving problems in a wide range of contexts, including the new or unusual.
  • The ability to think independently and to persevere when faced with challenges, showing a confidence of success.
  • The ability to embrace the value of learning from mistakes and false starts.
  • The ability to reason, generalise and make sense of solutions.
  • Fluency in performing written and mental calculations and mathematical techniques.
  • A wide range of mathematical vocabulary.
  • A commitment to and passion for the subject.
